At St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth, they believe it is vitally important that all children learn to be safe on the roads.

Pedestrian training starts as soon as they start school.

The school also runs annual Bikability training sessions for children throughout the school.

The Right Start Programme has been developed to enable children to become safer pedestrians and is based on the results of research, which has shown that children learn best through practical experience in the traffic environment.

The children have a number of sessions during which they go out of school and practice the road safety skills that they have learnt in class. All the sessions are progressive and cover the following elements:

Safer Places, Stop, Look, Listen and Crossing the road.

Mrs Driver and Mrs Pedder, both teaching assistants, are involved in the training and they work hard to develop children's road safety skills and awareness of the dangers of traffic.

This also links in nicely with an initiative that the schools Eco-School Council are working on, along with members of Whitworth Town Council, on trying to cut down traffic in and around the school in the mornings and after school.

They have purchased some large yellow "No Parking" signs which are put out in the hope that it will deter parents from parking dangerously and also are actively encouraging the children to travel to school safely on their bikes or car share with their neighbours.
