Young boxer celebrates year of success

Date published: 06 December 2012

A 20-year old local boxer, Andrew Kremner, a former pupil at Hopwood Hall College is celebrating his latest success.

Last Saturday, (1 December) Andrew won his latest fight against local favourite and Midlands Champion Dan ‘Macho Man’ Machin in the 63.5 Kg class at the Beachcomber Holiday Park, Cleethorpes. This was Andrew’s 27th fight in his career.

Andrew, who was representing Bridgewater and Salford Amateur Boxing Club, travelled down to the tournament with his coaches Neil Ashton and Lee Whitehead who discussed tactics on the journey down. Their guidance certainly paid off as Andrew was the only member of an away squad to win that evening as there was very strong local competition.

Andrew claimed the centre of the ring from the star and his well-targeted body- shots clearly troubled his opponent throughout the contest causing him to dip on numerous occasions. Andrew said: “My opponent couldn't keep up with my fitness, work rate or ability and was in for a long night. I was disappointed only to win on points but a win’s a win and the main thing is I learnt from the experience is to concentrate on picking my shots better next time.”

It was the Andrew’s first fight back from his most recent win in Walkden in July were he beat Grimsby boxer Drew Morgan on a unanimous points decision by putting on a boxing master class and tour-de-force in front of a packed audience by relentless avoidance and counter punching tactics which wore his opponent down skilfully.

Speaking to Rochdale Online, coach Lee Whitehead told us: “I have been involved in coaching Andrew for two years. He is a plucky fighter and is doing really well. This lad will have a great future if he keeps putting in the work the way he has done in the past year.

“He is very sports orientated and only recently stood down from football where he played with a Chadderton team in order to concentrate on his boxing career and a heavy training commitment.”

Andrew’s next fight is on 12 January on his home turf in Salford.
