Football: Sacred Heart FC Reserves win Open Trophy Final

Date published: 20 May 2017

Sacred Heart FC Reserves triumphed over Walshaw Sports Reserves in the Open Trophy Final at Trafford on Wednesday 3 May.

The team won two-nil, with captain Scott Brierly and Johnny Thompson scoring the winning goals.

Second team manager Lee Kershaw, who has just finished his first season managing the team, said: “We had a tough run and we thought it would be easier on the night; it was a rough game, which surprised us. They sent a man off with about 15-20 minutes left, which helped.”

He continued: “We got there last year and finished third in the League and I had a target to finish higher and win the cup.

“For the town and the club, it’s a massive achievement and I’d like to say a big thanks to Mellor Street Garage for sponsoring our kit.

"We’re looking forward to next season.”

Sacred Heart ‘A-team’ also performed well during their debut season playing in the league, reaching the semi-final stage to ultimately place fourth.
