Work on new Tesco superstore to start soon

Date published: 22 July 2009

Tesco are poised to begin building a new superstore in Middleton.

The store, off Assheton Way, will open its doors in Spring 2010 and has been designated as a ‘Regeneration Partnership’ store, promising huge employment opportunities for local people.

Tesco Regeneration Partnership stores focus on training and employing people who have been out of work for more than six months and before people start their training they will be guaranteed a job at the end of the course.

Work will begin with roadworks, including the re-modelling of the roundabout at the end of Manchester Road and other improvements such as bus stops and landscaping.

Assheton Way is being made into a single carriageway to create additional space for the new store.

Tesco will employ about 350 people in permanent jobs at the new store and a recruitment scheme will target the long-term unemployed, with help and advice given on making the application and interview skills.

Deborah Hayeems, of Tesco, said: "In a climate where many people are worried about job security, we are delighted to be creating further employment. Neighbourhood renewal is not just about the physical regeneration of inner city areas but also about the renewal of community life and providing sustainable job opportunities.”

Councillor Peter Williams, Chairman of Middleton Township, who has led the project, said everyone is looking forward to its completion to regenerate the town centre: “Moving the market has already increased the vibrancy of the town, and completion of the Tesco superstore will not only create new jobs but also increase the footfall in the town centre generating a massive commercial boost all round.”
