Worker dies after roof fall

A workman who fell through a roof of an industrial unit has died. The 42-year-old man was one of two men from a Littleborough firm to have fallen 25ft through a roof on an industrial site in Stockport.

The two incidents, which happened at different times on the same day, saw both men taken to Wythenshawe hospital were they were treated for head and body injuries.

The second man, a-45 year-old, remains in serious but stable condition.

Police and paramedics were called to the site in Stockport on two occasions on Tuesday 21 January. The first call was received at 9:15am and the second call was received at 3:55pm.

Both men are believed to have fallen through the same section of the roof into the unit they were working to demolish at industrial units on Manchester Road in Heaton Norris.

It is understood that the men were working to demolish two empty units next to the DIY store Wickes. The demolition of this unit will make way for a car park.

It is understood that C Smith and Sons LTD who are based in Littleborough were brought in to do the work by Brookhouse Group
who manage the site on behalf of the owners

The 45-year-old man was the first of the men to fall and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Later on in the day, the 42-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after falling through the roof.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the incident and said: “A joint investigation has now been launched between the police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish what happened.”
