Hospital staff take up offer of flu jab

Date published: 25 January 2013

Call goes out to encourage more people to follow the example of hospital staff and get their flu jab.

With some areas showing that 91 per cent of doctors have taken up the offer of vaccination against flu, NHS North West is urging members of the public to do the same, especially if they are entitled to a free injection.

Influenza often peaks between December and March and as the cold weather starts to take hold the pressure is on to take preventative measures so you avoid flu. The Department of Health has recently launched its ‘Catch it! Bin it! Kill it!’ campaign to help stem the spread and alongside that NHS North West wants to make sure as many people as possible get immunised.

One of the key barriers stopping people from accepting the flu jab is the reports of side effects as a result or claims about the effectiveness of the vaccination. However clinicians and medical professionals who know they are more likely to be in contact with someone with the flu virus have all opted to take the vaccination as they know it is the best option.

Flu vaccines are very safe. They may cause some soreness where you were injected and, less often, a slight temperature and aching muscles for a couple of days.

Most people entitled to a free vaccination, such as older people, pregnant women or those with chronic long term conditions such as respiratory illnesses, will have been contacted by their GP surgery. If you think you need a flu vaccination, check with your doctor or the practice nurse.

Remember, if you have the flu or even a cold stay away from large groups, particularly A&E departments at the hospital, and try to prevent its spread to others by always covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough and washing your hands regularly. If you need advice call your GP or preferably NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or you can call NHS 111.
