Sporting showcase marks one year until London 2012

A showcase of sporting activities has taken place in Heywood today (23 July) as part of ‘The Big Games’ – a national celebration of sports, to mark one year until the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Over 30 local clubs took part, including: Rochdale Junior Netball Club, Middleton Trampoline Club, Hamer Boxing Club, Rochdale Company of Archers, and Roch Valley Raiders BMX and Cycling Club.

As well as clubs showcasing their skills there were taster activities on offer at the Heywood Sports Village and Queen’s Park.

At the Sports Village there was a full A to Z of sports on offer from boxing to badminton and tri-golf to touch rugby. There was also an opportunity to play water polo, have a go on the gym equipment and take part in a dance class.

Over at Queen’s Park activities included archery, kayaking, BMX cycling and crown green bowls.

Craig McAteer, Managing Director of Link4Life said: “We are really excited to be able to offer this range of activities to celebrate one year to go to the Games and I’d like to thank all the many volunteers from clubs who have so enthusiastically joined in to support it.”

The Big Games is organised by Link4Life, the Rochdale Boroughwide Cultural Trust. Partners in the event include the Queen's Park Warden and Friends of Queen's Park, Rochdale Youth Service, Pennine Care Trust, CTC Cyclists’ Association and Rochdale MBC.
