Pupils learn importance of road safety

Pupils from Elmwood Primary School learn about the importance of crossing the road safely with PCSO Dominique Grimes.
Children at Elmwood Primary School in Middleton were given tips on road safety in an initiative designed to drive down the number of parents and visitors parked in front of school gates.
It came after concerns were raised over pupils’ safety when crossing the road outside the school as some parents were parked too close to the entrance gates when either dropping off or collecting their children.
PCSO Dominique Grimes of Middleton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “All too often you find that parents park in front of the schools without consideration of the consequences of being there. By showing the youngsters the importance of keeping to the rules you can then get the parents on board and encourage drivers to find a more suitable place to park and walk their children into and from school.
“Being parked this way causes congestion and makes the road more dangerous for children to cross. This warning is particularly important at this time of year as the dark mornings and evenings have rolled in and children will be going home as it gets dark, making them more vulnerable when crossing the road.”
