High school picks up prestigious award
Date published: 06 October 2008
Springhill High School was today presented with a highly prestigious award for their work with the local community.
The school has been given a Future Schools Award by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.
Only a few of these awards are given out every year and Springhill is the first school in the north of the country to be recognised.
It is all down to the work they do with the community that surrounds the school, such as encouraging adult learners and helping to boost community cohesion.
The awards are supported by top businesses such as Toshiba, Brother and Misco.
Bob Harrison, originally from Rochdale, who works for Toshiba, presented the award to Springhill.
“Springhill is very impressive on paper but in reality it is as well; when you get here you see what a great school it is,” he said.
“The award is nationally acclaimed and the school should be very proud of themselves.”
Mr Harrison attended Balderstone secondary school as a child. His former school will soon merge with Springhill to form a new foundation school built on the Springhill site.
He added: “We have got to raise aspirations of kids in Rochdale but we also need to raise the aspirations of their parents and this school helps to raise aspirations in the local community.”
Head teacher, Annabel Bolt, received the award and said she was ‘really proud’ of the school’s achievement.
“This award is down to the past 10 years of work the school has put in,” she said.
“We are absolutely delighted to be part of the Future Vision Awards as a school at the heart of our community.
“At Springhill we are passionate about our community, it gives us the inspiration and motivation to strive to be an outstanding school.”
Springhill has recently become a trust school, linking up with Zen Internet and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing.
