Guy Fawkes 400th! Celebrate the Heywood link

Peter Heywood is probably Heywood's most famous unknown figure, even in his home town.

A member of the Heywood Family, and a resident of Heywood Hall, Peter Heywood was solely responsible for capturing Guy Fawkes on 5 November 1605. Guy Fawkes was plotting to blow up the Houses of Parliament by planting gunpowder in the cellar. As Fawkes was about to light the fuse on the torch, Peter Heywood spotted him and snatched the torch from him to prevent the destruction of Parliament.

This is why we celebrate Bonfire Night on 5 November - to mark Peter Heywood's achievement in capturing Guy Fawkes!

To mark the 400th anniversary occasion in Heywood, a special bonfire and firework display is being organised for the community in Heywood to remember Peter Heywood.

Rochdale Council is organising the event in partnership with New Deal for Communities, Youth Bank and Heywood Arts.

Before the display, there will be a Lantern Parade from Lidl car park on George Street at 6.30pm. This will follow up to the bonfire at 7pm in Cherwell Avenue and the fireworks display commences at 7.30pm. There will be competitions involving young and older groups to create the best guy, the chosen winners will have the opportunity to light the bonfire.

It promises to be a special night. So whether you live in Heywood or are visiting, come along, take part in the parade enjoy the bonfire and fireworks and remember why we celebrate bonfire night.
