Simon Danczuk has taken the campaign to save South Street Nursery directly to Parliament.
The threat of closure comes despite the fact that the nursery had been rated “outstanding” by Ofsted for each of the last nine years.
In a House of Commons debate, Mr Danczuk explained his concerns to Government Minister Chris Grayling.
He said: “South Street Nursery in my constituency, which has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for the last nine years, could face closure by Rochdale Council because of massive cuts to their budget by this Conservative Government.
“Should we not have a debate on how this Government is adversely impacting on child care provisions?”
Speaking afterwards, Mr Danczuk said: “South Street Nursery was officially opened in 1934 by Lady Astor, the first female MP to take her seat in Westminster. I think she would be appalled that a Conservative government is putting such an excellent institution at risk of closure.
“I have put this issue directly to the Government and will continue to push to keep South Street open for the community in Rochdale.”
