Former Mayor Carol Wardle donates £5,000 to Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home

Date published: 20 November 2015

Former Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Carol Wardle has made a donation of £5,000 to the Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home.

Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home was chosen by Councillor Wardle as one of her main charities to raise money for as part of her mayoral year.

Councillor Wardle said: “I chose the Moorland Home because I was a governor of the former Birtle View special school and later a governor of Newlands special school, and I knew from their experiences of the home just how beneficial it has been to generations of special needs children, enabling them to have a wonderful holiday with open countryside and lots of fresh air with their teachers and volunteers to keep them safe.

“When special needs children are there it gives parents a break to give more individual attention to their other children. I was also pleased to learn that uniformed organisations like Beavers, Cubs and Brownies stay there as well. Many older residents of the borough have told me that if it wasn’t for the Moorland Home they would never have had a holiday because of their impoverished circumstances.”

Jane Barker, Chairwoman of Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home, said: “We were very pleased when we got the donation. We are currently refurbishing the kitchen and having a small extension so the money will go towards that. All together we need around £30,000 so this will be a huge help.

“When we heard that we had been chosen as one of Carol’s main charities we were really pleased. This donation and any that we receive are always greatly appreciated, but we always need more.”

Rochdale Children’s Moorland Home provides holidays in a healthy environment for over 300 children a year. The home attempts to meet all needs by changing what children require at the time and during the school holiday periods.

The home is currently looking for commercial kitchen equipment for the new kitchen - currently in need of a commercial cooker, a washer and a dryer. If you can help, contact Jane via:
