Further concerns following changes around Rochdale Station

Date published: 21 October 2015

Concerns have been raised in relation to the ongoing changes being made at Rochdale Station including parking concerns and traffic concerns.

Rochdale Online reported in September that rail group STORM had raised concerns that a new one way system around the subway was flawed.

Further concerns have now been raised in relation to parking around the subway and the one way system.

A member of STORM visited the station on Thursday 15 October and noticed the following:

  • New car park posters up with times of the subway opening and route.
  • A HGV blocking Miall Street due to cars and unloading.
  • A HGV being loaded on the car park street.
  • Notices stuck on lamp posts in Sarah Street for an announcement about up and coming restrictions.
  • Cars on Sarah Street parked half way out on to Maill Street with others parked on the footpath.

In September 2015, Rochdale Council stated: “The new, one-way system has been installed to improve traffic flows around the new car park, which has already improved parking issues in the area.”

Following further concerns, Mark Widdup, Director of Neighbourhoods at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The one-way system is the first of a series of changes which will improve traffic flow in the area.

“Until 31 October, we are advertising a proposed 20mph speed limit, two road humps and parking restrictions. If no objections are made, we will look to introduce these by the end of the year.”
