Council to take legal action against travellers in Bamford

Date published: 29 July 2015

Rochdale Council is set to take legal action against travellers who have been staying on land opposite Bamford precinct.

The land that the travellers have set up camp on is often referred to by locals as ‘The Village Green’ and it is understood that the site has not been used by travellers before.

Rochdale Council has confirmed that a health and welfare check is due to be undertaken and that notice will be served to the travellers, asking them to move within 24 hours. If this is not followed, the council will apply for a court order to move them on.

A spokesman for Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We are in the process of organising for a health and welfare check to be undertaken and will then serve the travellers with a notice requiring them to vacate the land within 24 hours.

“Once the 24 hours has expired, if they remain on site, we will apply for a court order to allow us to remove them from the site. We expect this court hearing to take place in the middle of next week and for the site to be vacated at some point towards the end of next week. Once the travellers have left we will tidy up the site and remove any waste or debris left behind.”
