Date published: 27 June 2015

The students from the 2014/2015 Uniformed Public Sectors course at Hopwood Hall College were joined by proud parents and distinguished guests on Friday (26 June) as they took part in their passing out parade.

Held at the Middleton Campus, students were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Surinder and Cecile Biant, Heywood and Middleton MP Liz McInnes, the Lord Lieutenant and representatives from the army and the police.

To start the ceremony, students marched onto the parade ground to the beat of a full RAF Cadet marching band.

Following the parade, students took part in a number of demonstrations to showcase what they had learnt whilst on the course.

Awards were then presented to students for:

  • Best Endeavour
  • Best Outdoor Education
  • Best PE
  • Higher Sports Leader
  • Best Student

An award entitled the ‘Luke Jameson Memorial Award’ was also handed out at this year’s ceremony.

Tutor John Hall said: “This event is a chance for us to celebrate the achievements and success of this year’s students. It has been another record year for students joining the civilian and military services.”

Terry Morley, the Centre Director for Sport and Uniformed Public Services, said: “This has been a really successful year for the uniformed services and it is the second year of a high success rate. I have to thank the staff on the course because the work we do together is phenomenal and I must thank the students who have worked hard. They are the ones that are the first to succeed and they really have worked hard.”

The Uniformed Public Services Department at Hopwood Hall College prepares young people for work in a wide range of public services, including the police, the fire and rescue service, the ambulance service, the army, navy, marines and air force, the prison service or HM Customs and Excise.

Students leaving the course will now go on to further education, or head off for careers in the armed forces. Some students will also continue their education at the college.
