Denehurst Park Cemetery to open later this year

Date published: 16 April 2015

A new cemetery at Denehurst Park is set to open later this year.

The project is part of a £3.5m scheme which includes improvements to the existing cemetery to ensure that the borough has enough space to bury its dead for the next 20 years.

In a report to Rochdale Council, Councillor Jacqui Beswick said: “Members will be aware of a new Cemetery at Denehurst Park with investment of approx £2.2m that will be formally opened later in the year.

“This new cemetery site will meet the requirements for burial space within the borough for approximately the next two decades.

“New stone gate pillars and four large ornate gates at the cemetery entrance, which faces Spotland Stadium on Sandy Lane, have been installed in the last few weeks to provide an appropriate new entrance to the site and wider park area.

“A new pathway network has also been provided to create better links between the park and surrounding areas, including Oulder Hill Community School.”

Work began to transform part of Denehurst Park into a 2,000 plot cemetery in February 2014.

Plans for a new cemetery were first made in 2010 when planning permission was applied for on green belt land off of Bury and Rochdale Old Road in Bamford. The plans were then pulled and five new sites were put forward in 2011.

After reviewing over 60 potential sites, Rochdale Council identified Denehurst Park as their preferred location in late 2011.
