New service from Springhill Hospice

Date published: 14 April 2015

Nearly 12 month’s ago, Springhill Hospice extended its work into the local community giving the people of the Borough access to services such as specialist nursing, Hospice at Home and Night Sitting.

The last piece of the jigsaw has now been slotted into place with the introduction of a Community Volunteer service, whose aim is to complement the work of the clinical Community Teams by providing support to patients and families in their own homes.

The type of duties the Community Volunteers will carry out include having a chat and a drink with a patient, light house duties, dog walking and light gardening.

Community Volunteer Coordinator, Sharon Hancock, has been busy signing up volunteers and one of the new recruits, Glen Byrne, explained why he was keen to get involved: 'At the time of losing my father five years ago, I realised how important it was for my father, myself and family to be surrounded by caring, compassionate people. After experiencing this, I felt in some small way I could offer the same back to others.'

If you are nterested in joining the Community Volunteer Team please contact Sharon Hancock, Community Volunteer Coordinator:
