Two members of Middleton Rotary Club are preparing for the Great Manchester 10K Run in May.
Club President Keith Trinnaman and former President Janice Powell are running in the annual charity event to raise money for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Mr Trinnaman has participated before in the Great Manchester 10K Run, as well as in other charity events such as the Virgin London Marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Great North Run for CLIC Sargent for children and young people with cancer.
He said: “I’ve been running for around seven/eight years for different charities for children. I chose the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital because it is harder for children to understand compared to adults what is going on, and I think anything I can do to make their lives easier can help.
The work the charity does is fantastic and when I visit and see what they do, it gives me enough inspiration for me to run.”
The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital is Mr Trinnaman’s nominated charity of his presidential year in the club and his target fundraising amount is £500. He added: “I’ve been fundraising through the Rotary Club of Middleton for many years.
I’m fairly confident we’ll reach our target by the donation closing date at the end of July, with probably an excess of about £1,000.”
Mr Trinnaman, who has been preparing for the run by running 10K three times a week down Rochdale Canal and from his treadmill in the garage, despite a minor injury in his foot, has been raising the funds alongside club chairwoman Mrs Powell. Although they are raising the money together, Mrs Powell will be running separately from Mr Trinnaman with her daughter.
She said: “I’m more of a jogger than a runner.
"It will be my sixth time I’ve done the Great Manchester Run. I’ve done it every year since 2009, except from last year.
“I haven’t had much training since I injured my knee but I’m confident I can get around, even if I have to walk.
“Keith and I aren’t running together because he is much faster than me, but we’re doing it for the same cause.”
Even though Mrs Powell didn’t participate last year, her granddaughter completed the Great Manchester Junior Run for Middleton Rotary Club’s Rain Catchment in Tharaka, Kenya, raising over £200.
This year’s Great Manchester Run will commence on Sunday 10 May and will be filled with lots of entertainment for those who wish to come along for support or to participate.
