War hero and local police inspector, John ‘Jack’ Wilson, releases biography

Date published: 31 March 2015

Former war hero and local police inspector, John ‘Jack’ Wilson has released a biography of his memories and life experiences.

A launch party was held at The Old Police Station on Saturday (28 March) to celebrate the release. All of the profits from the book go towards Cancer Research UK.

Now 92-year-old, Jack is retired and living in his home town of Clitheroe.

He began his book ‘Jack’, penned by his daughter-in-law Anne, two years ago with support from his family.

Jack Leech, Heywood Local Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Anne for donating all the proceeds of the book about her father-in-law to Cancer Research UK.

“To date, she has raised £630 which is fantastic. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for our ground-breaking research, so we rely on the generosity and efforts of supporters like Anne.”

Anne Booth released the biography to commemorate her father-in-law’s life, including his career as a chief inspector for Heywood Police, a kindling romance he shared with his wife, and his time serving for his country in the Royal Navy during World War II.

Chief Inspector Umer Khan said: “He’s a legend, a great character, and it’s great to support him.”

Mr Wilson attended the launch party at TOPS in Heywood to discuss his life stories and sign biographies.
