David Golden taking on 560 mile bike ride for Springhill Hospice

Date published: 08 March 2015

David Golden, 55, from Littleborough is set to embark on a 560 mile bike ride from John O’Groats in Scotland, back to his home town of Littleborough in aid of Springhill Hospice starting on Monday 4 May.

With just under two months to go, and having already raised more than £500, David is well on his way to smashing his original target of raising £1 per mile of his journey.

As an avid Spiritualist and member of the Spiritualists’ National Union (SNU), David’s decision to combine his new found love for cycling with a charity bike ride came after one of the Spiritualists’ seven founding principles, ‘Brotherhood of Man,’ really struck a chord with him.

After a tough few months in which his mother was diagnosed with leukaemia, his sister-in-law with terminal lung cancer and his cousin with prostate cancer, David’s spiritual focus on the Brotherhood of Man – an SNU principle which outlines that helping one another will make the world a better place – led him to thinking about how he could make a difference.

David said: “Springhill Hospice is an amazing place that has helped so many poorly people and their families through a very difficult time. I wanted to do something that would really challenge me and give me the chance to give back to a great local charity.”

David is hoping to complete his epic journey in just seven days and will be carrying out the challenge alongside his good friend Ian Nobel, an SNU Spiritualist Healer, who lost his wife to cancer.

David added: “Both Ian and I have experienced someone close to us affected by terminal illness and have seen the support that Springhill Hospice offers first hand. Through our Spiritualist faith, we know the importance of taking time to give back and help others so we are delighted that we are able to raise this money and hope that it will really help.”

David plans to continue helping others and has also set his sights on completing a bike ride from Manchester to Blackpool to challenge himself even further.
