Proposal to turn former Biwater Treatment building into flats

Date published: 04 March 2015

Developers are hoping to get planning permission for 107 new flats on a site in Hopwood which was previously the site of a water treatment plant.

The plan is to convert and refurbish the former Biwater Treatment building on Gregge Street, Heywood into six one bedroom apartments and 101 studio apartments with 116 parking spaces for resident use.

There will be one entry to the building which will be secured by fob keys and linked via CCTV to the apartments to ensure there is security on site with movement activated lighting also being installed for the parking area.

In the plans, developers say that the proposal “will contribute to public density; building on a residential mass to support shops and services in the area.

“The proposal is the result of a carefully thought out approach to design responding to the existing area. It would not only enhance and complement the neighbouring buildings but also generate landmark development, kick starting future developments in this area.”

It is hoped that the scheme will attract a range of young professionals including graduates, key workers and single people to the area.

Developers have also stated that this increase in occupancy “will have a positive effect on the community by increasing local amenities”.

A decision on the plans will be made in April.
