Baguley Crescent becoming a fly-tipping hot spot

Date published: 19 February 2015

Baguley Crescent in Middleton is becoming a hot spot for fly tipping.

The land, which is the responsibility of Bury Council, is often used to dump rubbish and in the latest incident of fly-tipped rubbish includes bin bags and household waste.

Bury Council is aware of the problem and agree that the area is in poor condition but say it is hard to enforce on the land as it is privately owned.

A spokesperson for Bury Council said: “We sympathise with the residents of Baguley Crescent as the area is in poor condition.

“The problem is caused mainly by illegal fly-tipping on privately owned land that the council is not responsible for keeping clear. There may also be some
contribution from irresponsible waste disposal by local residents and landlords.

“The situation is complicated by the fact that the land is not in the ownership of one single person or business. There are a significant number of landowners, some of who are absentee, which makes enforcement action and recovery of costs difficult.

“Where appropriate, enforcement action has been taken and will continue to be taken. However, as one lot of waste is removed, it is almost immediately replaced by more.

“A number of council departments have been working together and a site meeting between councillors and officers was held recently. Several options are being considered to clean up the current fly-tipped waste and take preventative action.”
