Fly-tipping in Ashworth Valley - on Christmas Day!

Date published: 27 December 2014

Ashworth Fold in Ashworth Valley is a Conservation Area and one of the last remaining unspoilt areas of Rochdale - or at least it should be.

Lunchtime Christmas Day residents witnessed a white Vauxhall Zafira drive along School Lane and down Ashworth Road, through the Conservation Area, and dump black bin bags of empty Christmas present wrappers, selection boxes and Christmas cards (some unopened) along their route.

The vehicle was captured on CCTV and clearly shows the rubbish being thrown.

A resident who inspected the fly tipped rubbish said: "The wrappers and cards have the names Mark, Denise, Kai and James on them with with gift tags from Daniel.

The resident added: "Flytipping is a major problem in the area but despite claims by the Council that they are prosecuting offenders, there seems to be little evidence of that.

"It is a regular occurence with tyres, fridge freezers and the like being dumped, made worse by the closure of the local tip.

"I have been resident of Ashworth for over 30 years and never seen it so bad. The Council should be doing its utmost to protect it but are more pre-occupied with spending on 'white elephants'.

"We are at our wits end and nobody seems to care."
