Date published: 19 May 2008

The Bishop of Manchester announced the appointment of the Revd Canon Cherry Vann to be the next Archdeacon of Rochdale.

This is the first time the Diocese of Manchester has appointed a woman to such a senior clergy post.

The Revd Vann has been a University Chaplain and a Chaplain to the Deaf. She is currently Bishop's Adviser in Women's Ministry, Chair of the House of Clergy, Area Dean of Farnworth and Team Rector of East Farnworth and Kearsley.

The Archdeacon-Designate, who is also a member of the General Synod, was appointed following widespread consultation.

The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Nigel McCulloch, said: "I am delighted about Cherry's appointment. She will be an excellent archdeacon and already has huge respect from clergy and laity across the diocese."

Canon Vann said: " I feel humbled to have been invited to serve as the next Archdeacon of Rochdale. I hope to serve the clergy and parishes of the Diocese well and look forward to taking up my duties soon."

Canon Vann studied piano and violin at the Royal College of Music. She later read theology at Westcott House, Cambridge. She has served her ordained career in Manchester Diocese serving in the parishes of St Michael, Flixton 1989-92: as a chaplain at Bolton Colleges of Further & Higher Education from 1994; St Peter, Bolton 1992-94; Chaplain for Deaf People and Part-time Team Vicar East Farnworth & Kearsley Team from 1998; Team Rector East Farnworth and Kearsley Team from 2004.

Canon Vann will take up her new duties in the early autumn. A date for her collation and installation in Manchester Cathedral will be announced shortly.
