Polio vaccinations for Kenyan school pupils
Children under the age of five at Mikoroshoni Primary School in Kenya have received polio vaccinations from the Mombasa County Government.
The school, which is a registered charity and was set up by a group of friends including Middleton Rotary Club member John Brooker, saw around 75 children under the age of 5 receive the vaccination.
John said: “We were over there to oversee the running of the school so it was a very good coincidence that the vaccinations were going on when we were there. It was good to see the vaccinations taking place and seeing them being done in the correct way.”
The vaccinations were being given after the country saw an outbreak of Wild Polio Virus. The outbreak occurred in the Dadaab refugee camp after the circulation of the virus in Somalia and South Suudan.
“It is very important that the children get the vaccination. Polio is a horrific disease and is certainly one that you don’t want to see a child taken ill with,” said John.
The vaccinations were given to children under the age of five during five days in April. The Mombasa County Government hopes that this effort helps to drive towards a polio free Kenya.
