Man stabbed during attempted robbery

Date published: 17 April 2014

A man was stabbed in the leg during an attempted robbery in Heywood.

The 24-year-old victim was walking across waste land near to George Street, Heywood when he was approached by two men with their faces covered.

One of the men demanded the victim’s phone and wallet and both went to grab hold of him, though the victim fought them both off.

But, as the victim fought off the second offender, the first pulled out a knife and stabbed him in his thigh before both men made off empty-handed towards George Street.

The first man is described as about 6ft tall and the second man about 5ft8in, and both had their heads and faces covered.

The attempted robbery happened at around 12.30am on Wednesday 9 April.

Detective Constable Daniel Daly said: “This may have started out as an attempted robbery, but this could quite easily have turned into something much more serious.

“The victim was left with a wound in his leg that required hospital treatment and stitches but was not life threatening, which is lucky considering where on the body he was stabbed.

“Given how quickly the offenders turned violent, it is extremely important for us to try and locate these two men, and if you think you have seen anything or anyone in that area at the time please do not hesitate to contact us.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 8701 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 55 111.
