Geoff Butterworth to appear on Flog It

Date published: 03 April 2014

Rochdale artist Geoff Butterworth will be appearing on the BBC1 programme Flog It.

Geoff was contacted by the BBC after he was recommended to them by a gallery in Clitheroe. They were filming a show and particularly wanted to speak to an artist.

Geoff said: “They came to my gallery to meet me at first but it is only small. They were anticipating about nine people being involved so I suggested we go to Towneley Hall were they have an exhibition of my work.”

Townely Hall currently houses three paintings of the hall, two of which are painted by Geoff. “The third painting is by J M Turner. A true master of his craft and when I told them that, they were impressed and said we should go there,” said Geoff.

For the show, Geoff and presenter Paul Martin sat and painted pictures from photos they took with a digital camera. Geoff added: “It was a rather dull day so I suggested I take a picture and then do a painting from that. We then went into the main gallery and set up the tables and did the painting. I did one and the presenter did one as well.”

Geoff described the day as “fun and a good day” but said he was under pressure. He added: “I was quite under pressure but it was still good fun. When we were off camera we were having a chat and a laugh but then when we were back on camera we had to be serious and look like we knew what we were doing.”

Geoff’s episode of Flog It will air on BBC1 later in the series. “I am looking forward to seeing it but I don’t like seeing myself on camera so I will have to try and ignore myself and just enjoy the programme,” said Geoff.

The paintings painted by Geoff and Paul Martin are currently on display at Towneley Hall.
