Derek Clutterbuck walks away with a national award

Date published: 01 April 2014

Derek Clutterbuck received a national award from the Ramblers in recognition of his dedication to protecting footpaths.

For 18 years Derek was the Rochdale Ramblers footpath secretary and has worked tirelessly to ensure the maintenance of 342 miles of footpath in the area. He scooped the Best Individual Achievement Award at the Ramblers President’s Volunteer Awards.

The finalists for the award were shortlisted by Kate Ashbrook, the Ramblers president, and walking enthusiasts across the country voted for the winner.

Kate said: "We congratulate Derek on his award. He has been hugely committed to working with Rochdale Council to maintain the footpath network in the area, ensuring the best walking opportunities, so this award is very well deserved.

“We would not be able to achieve what we do without our many volunteers. Our volunteer awards are a great way of thanking them for their hard work and celebrating their efforts and dedication.”

Derek has been a dedicated Ramblers member since 1982 and was one of the five original founders of the Rochdale Ramblers in 1994. As well as his work maintaining the footpath network in the area, he is also a walk leader.

The 83-year-old said: “I'm pleased but surprised to receive the award, there are plenty of people who have done as much and more for the Ramblers. I’d like to thank everyone who nominated and voted for me. Whatever I’ve achieved has been outweighed by the friendships I've made as a result, particularly in the Rochdale group.

“I still lead a walk or two, and make sure to keep my eyes open for any problems on paths so I can pass the information on to Roy Thorniley, our new Footpath Secretary. We are a friendly group of walkers, so if you fancy a ramble, please come and join us.”

In his official capacity of footpath secretary he has given evidence at public inquiries, objected to planning applications when appropriate and given presentations at council meetings. In 2011 he helped survey the 42-mile Rochdale Way and produce a report for the council on how the route could be improved for walkers.
