Incredible Edible - Milnrow and Newhey

Date published: 19 March 2014

A new initiative to get people in Milnrow and Newhey growing more vegetables, fruit and flowers was launched this week. With a £1,000 grant from the Pennines Township, Milnrow Horticultural Society is giving away free starter kits to encourage residents to grow herbs, vegetables, fruit and wildflowers.

Christine Williams from the society said: "People can come along to the society base on Sunday between 10.30am and 1.00pm and pick up their free packs. We have an initial 100 kits to give away, but if turns out to be roaring success then we will be seeking further funding to roll this project out long term.”

Residents who take the kits will be asked to submit photos of their projects to form a larger record of the project.

Councillor Andy Kelly said: “Taking inspiration from the Todmorden project, this initiative is aiming to get old and young alike involved in growing and sharing food, improving our environment and encouraging wildlife.

"The kits are just great, there are different starter packs to get bees to thrive, encouraging wildflower beds, growing tomatoes and lettuce and even a country garden pack.

"You don’t need garden either, you can start on a window sill and get growing.”
