AMENDED: New Aldi store to be built on Buckley Hill Lane

Date published: 22 January 2014

A new Aldi store is to be developed on land at Buckley Hill Lane following permission being granted by the Pennines Township Planning Sub-Committee.

Aldi is to make a £30,000 contribution towards upgrading a pedestrian route between the store and the town centre. The improvement works are set to improve lighting and replace existing surface paving.

The committee’s report concluded 'the regeneration related benefits such as local job opportunities, improved consumer choice and the relocation of the CIT business to another site within Rochdale would outweigh any negative impacts'.

The plans have met with strong support from local residents. The committee heard that the council had received just two letters of objection to the scheme - and 34 letters of support.

Among other things, most residents believe the store would increase consumer choice and provide local employment opportunities.
