Heywood station celebrates its tenth anniversary
Date published: 03 September 2013
Friday 6 September 2013 will mark ten years since the reopening of Heywood station and its four mile line from Bury to Heywood.
The East Lancashire Railway’s (ELR) extension from Bury to Heywood reopened its passenger services in 2003 – almost 33 years after the line had been closed to passengers in October 1970 as a result of the Beeching Closure proposals.
The Heywood extension of the ELR’s existing line from Bury to Rawtenstall came after years of hard work by ELR volunteers to restore the line.
The restoration included the construction of a new bridge at Bury to cross the Metrolink tram line and the replacement of a missing bridge at Pilsworth Road Bridge on the outskirts of Heywood.
