Oulder Hill summer school showcase

Date published: 03 August 2013

Oulder Hill Community School displayed the work of their summer school students at a showcase event.

A CSI theme gave the students opportunities to be crime scene investigators, scientists and journalists.

Work on display included artwork, dance performances and videos based on the children’s recreations of a CSI murder mystery.

Summer School coordinator Christine Sykes said: “This day lets us show the parents work that has been done and show off many different displays.”

The summer school, which is held for eight days of the summer holidays, aims to help children who will be starting year 7 of Oulder Hill Community School in September.

Christine added: “It helps the children build relationships, meet new friends and it helps them get to know staff from the school.”

Activities during the course of the summer school have included maths, science, English, sport and Spanish.

Christine added: “We try and be academic but also try and include fun activities so we can be as varied as possible.”

This year the summer school has been extended from three days to eight days with the help of Capita, a leading supplier in support services in education.

Christine added: “Capita can help offer activities that we can’t offer on our own. They organised a tour of the Manchester City ground which gave the children a fun day out.”

The summer school has been successfully running for five years and always receives praise from local parents. “The feedback is always good. The parents love it and we have a good reputation” said Christine.

Summer schools are a government funded project and places are offered to children who are on the free school meal plan. Oulder Hill Community School is a high school for pupils from year 7 to year 11.

Oulder Hill places emphasis on promoting community events and getting involved with the local community.
