Date published: 17 July 2013

Four people have been arrested following a violent disturbance in Rochdale.

Police were first called to reports of fighting on Salkeld Street, at 12.50pm on Tuesday 16 July 2013.

When officers attended there was no on-going disturbance and no reports of any incidents or offences were made to police.

A short time later police were called to a further disturbance involving a large group of people at Salik Gardens. It is believed some of those present were involved in the earlier incident.

Two people reported matters later to the police, having attended hospital for treatment to injuries, which are not thought to be serious.

As part of an investigation into the disorder, four people have today, Wednesday 17 July 2013, been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

They remain in police custody for questioning.

Inspector Umer Khan, said: “It appears that this may have been sparked by little more than a traffic dispute, however the incidents that followed brought ugly scenes to our streets.

“We quite simply will not stand for such behaviour and as a result of the investigation that was launched immediately following these incidents we have arrested 4 people.
