Rotary funding for disabled cricket team

Representatives from the Rotary Club of Middleton presented The Middleton Cricket Club Disabled Cricket manager, members of the team and the Vice Chairman with £1,280 to allow the disabled cricket team to compete this season.

Asked about the Rotary funds John Burton, Vice Chairman of the Middleton Cricket Club, said: “This fantastic funding award from the Rotary Club of Middleton means we will be able to continue to provide competitive cricket for the disabled in the Middleton area.

"The cricket played will be at the highest county level with all travel expenses for away games and help facilitate our home games as well. Since the ECB /BACD has recently reduced our funds over the next three years.

"This award has come at just the right time for the Disabled Cricket team.”

The Rotary Club of Middleton President Jeff Lawton said: “The Rotary Club of Middleton is proud to be supporters of the Middleton Disabled Cricket team. The Middleton Cricket Club is at the heart of our community and the disabled cricket team has worked hard to achieve their massive success.

"Rotary is pleased to support the coach and his team by funding their season. The coach and team are true champions and we hope other disabled players will join them this season.”

Asked about the goals for this season, Alan Foster said, “My aspirations for the squad is to continue to build and improve both skill and confidence levels.

“I want people with any type of disability to contact me. We have a winning team and we are looking for new players to join us. I want to challenge those who feel they can’t do any type of sports activity to come and try. I am sure they will enjoy it, make new friends, have a laugh and learn something new.”

The disabled cricket team’s season starts in May and finishes in September. Middleton Cricket Club has open training sessions starting in April at the Middleton Cricket Club on Rochdale Road.  Anyone with a disability is welcome to attend at no cost. There is three coaching staff for the disabled cricket team all England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) qualified.
