Students pick up health and fruity tips

Date published: 22 November 2012

Staff and students at Hopwood Hall College got their ‘Five a Day’ when a group of young Catering students ran a stall selling healthy snacks during the College’s recent Health Week.

Their homemade smoothies, tuna and tomato pasta snack pots, flapjacks, cereal bars and fruit cake went down well with other students and staff members.

As  well as running the stall support their studies into the hospitality industry, the students also raised funds for Springhill Hospice in Rochdale.

Tutor Katie Allen said: “I am really proud of them – they worked very hard to ensure it was a success and demonstrated excellent teamwork skills. They raised money for the hospice and did fantastic work promoting how important it is to include fruit in your daily diet.”

In partnership with local charities, the College ran a host of activities during the week to raise awareness and offer support to the students and staff on health and wellbeing issues.

These included sessions on drug and alcohol awareness facilitated by Acorn Project Treatment & Housing, a workshop on mental health led by local community network Voices4Wellbeing and First Aid training by St John Ambulance.
