Ex-mayor of Rochdale dies

Ronald Lewis, Mayor of Rochdale 1980-81
On Tuesday morning, (16/10/12) the ex-mayor of Rochdale Ronald Lewis died.
Ronald was Mayor of Rochdale in 1980-81.
He came to Middleton in 1958 and was elected to Middleton Town Council as a Conservative councillor in 1969, be became a member of Rochdale Council in 1974.
Ronald served as a JP in Middleton for 25 years and only retired due to the age restrictions for JP’s in 1995. He was a Cub Scout Leader for many years, Chair of Governors for Parkfield and Alkrington Primary Schools, a Friend of Bielefeld Twinning and a member and Past President Middleton Probus.
In 2008 Ronald attended the 30th Anniversary of the ex-Mayors dinner; to celebrate the anniversary he was presented with a certificate to mark the occasion.
Ronald’s funeral service will take place on Thursday October 25 in Middleton Parish Church at 12.00noon followed by a private cremation.
His widow Alice has requested donations in lieu of flowers to the Submariners Association c/o S Wellens & Sons Ltd, Funeral Directors, 121 Long Street, Middleton, M24 6DL, Tel: 0161 643 2677.
