Vote for your local NHS Hero for national recognition

Date published: 06 September 2012

Patients of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and the general public have only a few weeks left to nominate their ‘NHS Hero’ as part of a new national scheme to recognise the great work that individuals and teams do every day in the NHS.

The NHS Heroes scheme, launched in July 2012, will celebrate the Health Service staff – from senior doctors to ancillary staff and managers - who go the extra mile to improve life for patients.

NHS Heroes encourages patients and their families to nominate NHS staff members and teams whose compassion and kindness has made a difference to their lives.

NHS workers are also being encouraged to nominate colleagues who they see go above and beyond the call of duty every day.

John Saxby, Chief Executive of The Pennine Acute Trust, said: “We held our third annual staff awards event in June which was very successful and our way of recognising and celebrating the extraordinary efforts and good work of teams and individuals across the Trust over the past year. It provided the opportunity to thank staff formally with the recognition and applaud they deserve.

“NHS Heroes is an exciting new national recognition scheme designed to celebrate the work that staff in the NHS carry out every day. It will complement our annual staff awards and help bring national attention to the local healthcare heroes who mean so much to the people they serve.

“Your NHS hero could be anyone who works or volunteers in our hospitals, from those who keep the wards clean, who make you a cup of tea or hold your hand when you need it, to those who save lives every day – they are all heroes. I know that for every NHS hero nominated there will be hundreds more who deserve the accolade. Show them your appreciation by nominating your NHS Hero.”

Dean Royles, Director of NHS Employers, said: “The NHS is about teamwork so I hope we see nominations from clinical and non-clinical staff within the NHS, and of all those working on behalf of the NHS in voluntary, independent and charity sectors. It's fantastic that anyone – patients, NHS staff and members of the public – can nominate their NHS Hero and make sure those people who have made a real difference to their lives get the recognition they so richly deserve.”

NHS Heroes gives everyone in England the chance to acknowledge NHS staff. Patients and families, work colleagues and professional peers can nominate their personal NHS heroes and celebrate their achievements on a national stage.

Patients, family, carers and friends can nominate their NHS Hero by via the NHS Heroes website www.nhsheroes.com

Nominations close noon on Friday 21 September 2012.
