Taxi driver robbed

Date published: 02 July 2012

A taxi driver was car-jacked as he was leaving for work in Rochdale.

At about 6.25am on Friday 29 June 2012, the 36-year-old man was leaving his house on Calder Street in Smallbridge and got into his taxi, a Vauxhall Vectra.

A man then opened the driver's door, brandishing a weapon, and pointed it at his neck. He told the victim to get out of the car.

He then grabbed the victim by the arm and dragged him out of the taxi, which he then got into before driving off.

The offender is described as white, of slim build and about 5ft 5in tall. He was wearing a balaclava and dark clothes.

The car was a silver Vauxhall and had Leeds City Council taxi plates on it.

The car remains outstanding.

Detective Constable Hannah Greetham said: "The victim in this case has been left badly shaken, and was also denied his means of income.

"He cannot remember what the offender threatened him with but he clearly feared for his safety.

"We would ask that anyone who has information about the car, or who may have witnessed this incident, makes contact with us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4637 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
