Castleton railway station is blooming

Date published: 13 June 2012

A joint project with pupils from all Castleton’s primary schools has blossomed on The Manchester bound platform at Castleton Railway station.

The initiative for the project has come from the Rochdale Township in Bloom committee who have provided funds of over £250 to purchase Planters, Hayracks and Bedding plants. Permission for this project to go ahead was given by Northern Rail and the Transport Police earlier this year in consultation with The Friends of Castleton Station.

Under the watchful eye of Roy Down from Matthew Moss High School and local ward Councillor Billy Sheerin, the village representative for the Township in Bloom committee the children from St Edwards and Castleton Primary School with support from St Gabriel's and St Johns Thornham donned their planting gloves and potted up a feast of colour for the benefit of all the community.

The floral display at the station will be judged by members of the Royal Horticultural Society on the morning of 17 July along with other special areas of Castleton and the Rochdale Township.

Cllr Sheerin commented: “Let’s hope that Castleton, like it did last year, can contribute to winning another Gold Award. The pupils have worked very hard and I hope all the village will pop down to the station and admire their work.”
