Delivery driver jailed for sexual assault

Date published: 12 April 2012

A delivery driver from Rochdale has been jailed for sexually assaulting a woman - despite claiming he did it in his sleep.

Alan Walker, 47, said he suffered from 'sexsomnia' and had not been awake when he attacked a mother in her 20s at a house in Whitworth, Lancashire.

The jury at Bolton Crown Court, however, refused to accept his defence and he was sentenced to two years in jail for sexual assault by penetration.

The victim said she awoke at a house where they were both staying last January to find Walker attacking her.

Walker, who has children and two jobs, had no previous convictions for sex offences, the hearing was told.
"It is clearly a very serious offence," said recorder Nick Clarke, QC.

"Inevitably, for offences of this severity and gravity, a prison sentence will be imposed," he added, describing the case as ‘difficult and sensitive."
