Lower section of Drake Street closed for 12 weeks

Date published: 25 May 2011

The lower section of Drake Street, between Water Street and Smith Street, will close to vehicles for around 12 weeks from 31 May.

The closure is part of the ongoing Metrolink works and is to allow for utility diversion works to be carried out.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via Water Street, Molesworth Street
and Smith Street.

All businesses will be open as usual and pedestrian access along Drake Street will be maintained.

Rochdale Borough Council Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Economic Development, Councillor Peter Williams, said: “A great deal of work has been done already and everything is on schedule, but there is a lot still to do and we understand that it does cause disruption.

“Rochdale town centre has been identified as a key driver in the regeneration of the borough and Metrolink is just one of many developments that will help transform the area.

“Anyone that goes into the town centre at the moment can’t fail to see the progress being made. On Smith Street construction of the new customer service centre, library and council offices has started and that’s due to be completed next year, along with the new leisure centre on Entwisle Road.

“Refurbishment of Toad Lane Pioneers Museum is underway in preparation for the events that will take place next year in celebration of the International Year of Co-operatives, and the police station is being refurbished. In addition, consultation has been taking place over the last couple of weeks on what people want to see in the new retail and leisure development.

"We really are moving towards changing the town centre for the better and we are committed to working with our partners to deliver all of these projects, despite the challenging times we’re facing and will continue to face.”

A letter from Transport for Greater Manchester sent to stakeholders reads: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused, thank you for your patience while we build your new Metrolink line.”

Information regarding affected bus services will be available from Traveline
on 0871 200 2233, after 26 May 2011.
