Oulder Hill Community School and Language College

Thank you to all parents and carers of Year 8 students who came to parents’ evening last week. As ever, the evening was very well attended – it is always fantastic to see so many of you supporting your children with their education. A reminder to parents and carers of Year 10 students that parents’ evening for your children will take place this coming Wednesday. Please check your child’s planner for appointment times.

School closes for the Easter holidays at 3.00pm on Thursday 14 April and reopens at the normal time on Tuesday 3 May. We wish you all a happy and relaxing break.

On Friday 15 April staff and students at Oulder Hill are taking part in a Swimathon to raise money for the NSPCC. Staff will participate in the morning session and students (over 50 are registered to compete so far) in the afternoon. The total amount raised will be announced shortly after the Easter break and we urge family and friends to be as generous as possible to support our students’ efforts. Thank you to everyone who is getting involved.

Congratulations to our Year 11 boys’ basketball team, who last week won a hard-fought and close match against Kingsway Park to become the Rochdale Champions. This achievement was made all the more special due to the fact that this is the fifth year in succession that they have done this. The boys involved were Matthew Green, Josh Marsden, James Taylor, Sam Clayton, Jordan Jones, Matthew Miles, Chris Hayley, Jack Simpson, Scott McNiffe and Connor Pickup.

Calling all budding photographers - we are running a photography competition for students on the theme of ‘Another Language, Another Culture.’ No prior experience or expertise required, just a bit of imagination, creative thought and a good eye. There are various categories, so students are encouraged to read the flier on display in their form room, and to enter, upload their photograph onto the VLE - there are some fabulous prizes on offer, so good luck. More details are available from Mr Cowperthwaite or Mr Galway.

Last week, 50 Business Studies students from Years 10, 11 and 13 went on a visit to Cadbury World in Birmingham to see for themselves how a business applies the knowledge and understanding they have learned in their course. They had a talk about how important marketing is to Cadbury and why the company sells so many different types of chocolate products. Following this they embarked upon a tour of the exhibition, learning the facts about chocolate and the history behind Cadbury right up to the modern day, sampling delicious treats along the way.

Finally, we are delighted to announce that four of our Year 10 students entered the annual ‘Maths Challenge’ at Bury College last week, competing against 9 other schools from across the north-west…..and they won! This is a fantastic achievement, especially considering the stiff competition they were up against in the form of schools such as two-time champions Little Lever. Well done to Matthew Miles, Hana Barzinji, Sobia Hussain and Jessica Dale
