CSI fun at summer school

Date published: 27 July 2010

Students of Oulder Hill Community School have taken part in a Crime Scene Investigation themed Summer School in effort to promote and enhance learning.

The summer school was organised and led by Science Co-ordinator, Christine Sykes and took place from 22 July to 24 July.

Students arrived on day one to discover a murder had taken place in one of the Science laboratories.

After lessons in forensic science, the art of psychology and of telling lies the student-investigators were on their way to unravel the murder mystery.

The year 7 pupils split into three teams: CSI: Miami; CSI: New York; CSI: Las Vegas.

In their teams and working collaboratively to solve the crime, students immediately put their forensic skills to use in collecting evidence and analysing it, donning lab coats, goggles and shoe and arm protectors so as not to contaminate potential evidence.

The detectives then watched a video interview with a suspect and were able to put their newly acquired psychology knowledge to the test to detect if the suspect was in fact telling the truth or telling lies. Exhibiting their acting skills with drama teacher, John Holt, students performed exciting re-enactments of the Science Lab break-in and murder in attempt to solve the crime.

Of course, no murder is complete without full media coverage so after a master-class in news media from English teacher, Gill Benét the students demonstrated their writing skills by producing newspaper articles.

The summer school aimed to enhance learning and broaden the horizons for these year 7 pupils through applying education in a professional capacity and appears to have been a great success.
