BMI Highfield Hospital Rochdale introduces robotic assisted joint replacement surgery

Date published: 15 April 2021

Private patients who need a knee or hip replacement can now have their operation with the assistance of a handheld robotic system and surgical navigation after the installation of innovative new systems at BMI Highfield Hospital in Rochdale last month.

The systems are comprised of the Smith+Nephew NAVIO handheld robotic system for knee and partial knee replacement surgery and the RI.HIP NAVIGATION on the KICK system for total hip replacements.

The surgical systems will be used to offer patients a state-of-the-art alternative to traditional methods of joint replacement surgery, with the first case being performed by Ardeshir Bonshahi, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, trained in robotic-assisted surgery, on 23 March 2021.

Mr Bonshahi said: “Thanks to the introduction of the handheld robotic system, we can now offer our patients surgery with this equipment that could deliver a smoother and speedier recovery.

“It’s an exciting time for the ever-evolving medical world and this advancement shows we are maintaining our drive to help return our patients to their previous quality of life as effectively as possible.”

Sean Crooks, BMI Highfield Hospital Executive Director said: “Welcoming the Smith+ Nephew NAVIO and RI.HIP NAVIGATION surgical systems to BMI Highfield is an exciting time for our surgeons and patients alike. We are proud to offer patients this option which is designed around helping them get back on their feet more quickly.

“We expect that this handheld robotic system and surgical navigation will help transform the way our surgeons perform knee and hip joint replacements, enhance the recovery time and overall process for patients undergoing a knee or hip joint replacement surgery.”
