Liz McInnes MP calls for urgent support for Children’s Services

Date published: 13 December 2018

Liz McInnes MP has challenged the government to provide the funding needed to plug a gap of £4.5million in Rochdale Council Children’s Services, and a £840million shortfall nationally.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday (Tuesday), Liz raised the issue with Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss MP. In the October Budget the Chancellor pledged just £84million extra for Children’s Services nationally.

Liz McInnes MP says: “There is a growing crisis in providing Children's Services in England.

"Rochdale Council predicts an overspend on Children's Services of £4.5million this year, while local government in England as a whole predicts an overspend of £840million. The response of this government is to offer just £84million extra. Like everything else the Tories do, this just doesn't add up.

"Just a matter of weeks ago the government announced the end of austerity, but that clearly isn’t yet the case for thousands of vulnerable children and the services they rely on. This simply isn’t good enough.”
