Jubilee Park in Norden proved it is up there with the very best of Britain’s horticultural displays at the national RHS Britain in Bloom awards in Belfast on Friday (19 October).
Each year, a selection of the very best RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood and Parks projects are recognised for their achievements, following excellence in their regional competition and nomination by the coordinators.
The park was just one of four in the UK to be awarded a national certificate of distinction for the best ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ parks award, which the Friends of Norden Jubilee Park will receive at the upcoming regional North West Britain in Bloom awards in Southport.
Paul Ellison, chairman of the Friends of Norden Jubilee Park and Rochdale in Bloom vice chairman, commented: “I was speechless when I found out the great news. It’s all down to our great bunch of volunteers who work hard all year round to keep our village looking as good as it does.
“Our Friends group is lucky to have them keeping Norden in bloom.”
Committee member, Phil Starr added: “Each year Jubilee Park goes from strength to strength and it was an great achievement this year to be part of Rochdale In Bloom's National Gold Award. To then find that Jubilee Park had been given such a high national accolade was something of immense pride for the park and its people.
“Judges were particularly impressed by the community involvement in the park, the volunteers, the community groups and all the partners who use the park and help with it being at the heart of the village."
The certificate follows as the Rochdale in Bloom committee scooped a prestigious gold award for their efforts at the national awards.
Now in its 54th year, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom is one of the most effective, and longest running, environmental competitions in the UK, which pits rural villages, urban corners and city centres against one another across a range of criteria that includes horticultural know-how, community engagement, efforts to bolster biodiversity and climate change adaptation.
