St John Ambulance in Greater Manchester is appealing for new volunteers to step forward to learn how to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

Specific opportunities exist as adult first aiders across the region and at Old Trafford to provide first aid cover for the fans at Manchester United home games.

Volunteers from the charity are a familiar, and reassuring sight, at football stadia, concert halls and other venues across the region.

New adult volunteers receive training in first aid and are expected to reach a reasonable level of proficiency after six to nine months.

Once the training has been completed, the new volunteers will have a chance to take their skills out to public gatherings in the local and regional area to deliver life saving first aid to anyone who needs it.

In addition to delivering first aid at community and public events, volunteers meet one evening a week and are asked to give a minimum of 60 hours a year.

Successful applicants will need to pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Selection and training for these opportunities will take place in September and October, the closing date for applications is 15 August.

A vacancy has also arisen for a volunteer Area Manager for the charity, a role which takes on responsibility for a number of volunteer Units across the region.
