Tony Lloyd MP signs pledge to save young lives

Date published: 17 April 2018

Tony Lloyd, MP for Rochdale, on Tuesday (17 April), signed a pledge to promote healthcare policy preventing sudden cardiac deaths among young people.

The Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) pledge calls for a National Strategy for the Prevention of Young Sudden Cardiac Death. CRY estimates that there are at least 12 sudden cardiac deaths every week among people aged under 35.

CRY explains that current UK policies are contradictory, with guidelines based on inconsistent assessments of the incidence, methods of diagnosis and management of cardiac conditions in young people.

Mr Lloyd said: “I am astonished to learn that 12 young people die per week in the United Kingdom from undiagnosed cardiac conditions. In total this means over 600 people die every year in such a way, which means that it is likely that these figures include someone in Rochdale. It is crucial that we raise awareness of these conditions and it is only right that we work to stop these deaths from happening.”
