The teenage boy involved in a collision with a lorry in Middleton on Monday is in a critical condition.

At about 11.45am on Monday 3 April 2017, a blue Volvo lorry was driving towards Manchester on Heywood Old Road when it was involved in a collision with a cyclist, at the junction of Langley Lane.

The cyclist – a 13-year-old boy – was taken to hospital with serious head injuries where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the lorry – a man in his 30s – stopped at the scene and spoke to police.

Road closures were in place whilst officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene.

PC Michelle Quinn from the SCIU said: “The boy’s family are currently at the hospital with him and are understandably devastated. We are continuing to offer our support to them.

“We need to know exactly what happened and have been carrying out enquiries to try and establish this.

“I would ask anyone who witnessed this collision and hasn’t yet spoken to police, to please do so.

“Maybe you saw the van or boy beforehand, if you did then please also get in touch.

“Dashcam footage could also prove vital in helping us understand the circumstances behind this. If you think you have relevant footage then let us know.”

Anyone with any information should call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 6471 quoting incident number 819 of 3 April 2017.
