Along with Christmas carols, the service also features bible readings, prayers and a reflection from the Vicar of Rochdale, Revd Mark Coleman.

Revd Coleman said: “It was a wonderful evening and exciting to see how a TV event is put together. The congregation sang the traditional carols beautifully. I am looking forward to seeing it all come together when broadcast.”

In the recording Revd Coleman speaks of the great goodness he has encountered in Rochdale with people of all faiths and none. He said: “You don’t have to look too far to see the good all around you. Think of the kindness of your neighbours, friends and the strangers you meet. Many times, when I have begun to lose hope, my eyes have been opened by the heavenly love made real in other people.”

The service includes contributions from the Olympic hockey champion, Nicola White, Sinead Collins of Maggie's Centre in Didsbury and Coronation Street actress Rhea Bailey.

The festive celebration also includes performances from pop singer Nathan Sykes, soul singer Shaun Escoffery, The Faithettes and jazz singer Natalie Williams.

The congregation is accompanied by the A4 brass quartet and singers from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Christmas Carols on ITV will be broadcast at 11.45pm on Christmas Eve and is an hour long special.
